How Yoga Enhances Pregnancy:

In pregnancy, your constantly changing body and sometimes busy mind can benefit greatly from gentle yoga practice. Yoga will give you energy, helping you to feel strong and confident in your pregnancy, as well as bringing balance to the body, heart and mind. Yoga also helps to open up the pelvis before the birth and recover good muscle tone after it.

Not everyone always feels like they are “glowing” during their pregnancy, and may suffer from nausea and some general discomfort from time to time. Pregnancy yoga helps to relieve those aches and pains that are caused from your ever changing physical shape, and can also help to combat morning sickness.

Everyone’s labour and birth is different but by practicing yoga during pregnancy you are giving yourself the best chance at keeping relaxed during the process. In our pregnancy yoga class we practice different types of breathing techniques, and also combine this with practicing a variety of poses which are suitable for labour and birth.

What to expect during my pregnancy yoga class:

Each class starts with a short relaxation to centre the mind after a busy day, where we focus on breathing exercises, followed by some gentle warm ups. We then move into the poses which can be done seated, on all fours or in a standing position. All poses are done with the breath and focus on gently stretching and strengthening the body. A few of the standing poses are slightly more challenging, deisgned to strengthen key muscles which are often weakened greatly during pregnancy.

We always end every class with a wonderful relaxation which is very often the favourite part of the class for most mums-to-be!

Please bring a yoga mat and a pillow or a cushion with you to class.

Classes:

I will be teaching until 6th March 2018 and will then be on maternity leave. The Pregnancy Yoga classes will be running and the fabulous Emily will be covering for me until the end of August. I'm asking that all payments be made online via Paypal during this time, including drop-in. You don't need a paypal account, just a valid debit or credit card.

Private classes are also available on request. I used to teach at the Yoga4All Studio, Airside, for many years but  I now teach my Swords classes up in the lovely Applewood Community Centre.

Please Note:

Current research all point to the fact that exercising throughout all 3 trimesters of pregnancy is healthiest for mum and for baby, in an uncomplicated pregnancy. If you had quite a sedentary lifestyle before you became pregnant, or are overweight, you should focus only on gentle exercise for 15 mins per day, 3 days per week, building up your fitness eventually up to 30 mins per day, 4 days per week. Walking or swimming are perfect exercises for the first trimester, particularly if you fall into this category. I ask that all women are at least 12 weeks pregnant to attend my class, as yours and baby’s body are undergoing great physical adaptation until this stage. But if you have been regularly exercising at least 4 days per week, are fit, and have an uncomplicated pregnancy, please give me a call first to see if you can attend the class during your first trimester.

* All 4 or 6-week courses must be taken consecutively. If you miss a class without giving me 24 hours notice, unfortunately, you will forfeit that class.
